Yennefer of Vengerberg

In December 2019 as we approached the festive season, I took some time over a few weeks to watch the Netflix series the Witcher and after watching the first four episodes, I went back to the beginning and then watched all eight episodes, this time with a better understanding for what had happened and the events which took place leading up to that moment. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and as much as I love watching Henry Cavill as the Witcher, I also grew fond of Yennefer of Vengerberg.

Since watching the first series of the Witcher, I have also learnt that there are eight books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, as well as a Witcher video game series. As is usual for me, having watched the first series of the Witcher, I now plan to start reading the books in their reading order. I do not read many books, around one or two a year, however if something interests me, then I do put in the time to read more.

For those of you who have not read, seen or even played the video game, Yennefer has a family, however she had a rough childhood due to a congenital hunchback. Yennefer’s father blamed her mother for Yennefer’s deformity claiming that she was not his child. As per the television series, as a young adult Yennefer is bought and then finds herself at Aretuza which is a magical academy for young ladies who have a magical gift. She is taught magic and how to control the chaos inside her. Finally before she graduates she transforms into a beautiful woman however this comes at a price, as she will never be able to bear children of her own.

Yennefer is then the king’s mage in Aedirn however she becomes dissatisfied and starts to source ways in which to get her fertility back, before she moves onto another town and goes into hiding for a while which is where she also meets Geralt of Rivia or rather he finds her. I don’t want to give too much away, so if you have not yet had a chance to watch the series, then I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of fantasy.

I am already looking forward to the second series and in the meantime, I will start reading the books. As well as paperback or the digital versions, these books are also available as audio books.

Well I have enjoyed starting the New Year with my first blog post in the fantasy realms and there will be more as we go through 2020. I have added my styling notes, together with the photos on my Flickr page so please feel free to take a look. Until next time …
