All Hallows Eve

Posted in Uncategorized by Piper Hanriot on October 29, 2011

In my last blog for October 2011, I’m going to share with you a little history about All Hallow’s Eve or as most of you know it today, Halloween.  For the past week I have been visiting my favourite clothing designers in SL eagerly waiting to see what delights they were creating for women this year.  So whilst I share some of the history with you, I will also share some photos of this wonderful Halloween attire.

Here is my first gown.  From Sascha’s Designs, one of my all time favourites, this is “Halloween Pudding”.

Halloween, one of the oldest holidays is celebrated on October 31st in several countries around the globe.  The word itself, Halloween, actually has its origins from the Catholic church.  It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve.  Many Halloween traditions, which are practised in the present day, have their roots in medieval times.  Halloween in the middle ages included bonfires and dressing up in costumes, all of which are believed to have been intended to confuse and frighten any spirits wandering the area.  In pagan times, soul cakes were left outside for Halloween to feed the spirits but the medieval church changed this to the practise of people taking cakes to their neighbours which they offered to their neighbours in exchange for prayers for the dead.

My next gown is a more medieval design in black, commonly worn by witches on All Hallow’s Eve, the “Black Widow” gown from The White Armory.

Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween.  Children go in costume to other people’s houses asking for treats such as sweets or money with the question “trick or treat?”.  The word “trick” is an idle threat to cause mischief on their neighbour or their home if no treat is given.  In this custom the child performs some sort of trick to earn their treat.

From traditional black, we now go to vibrant orange, a popular Halloween colour and to a brand new gown by Madison’s Creations

Halloween costumes are usually modelled on supernatural figures such as monsters, ghosts, witches and skeletons.  The first mass produced Halloween costumes appeared in stores in the 1930’s when trick-or-treating was becoming more popular in the United States.  There are also several games traditionally associated with Halloween parties.  One common game is dunking or apple bobbing in which apples float in a large tub or basin of water and the participants must use their teeth to get the apple from the basin.

And finally, my last favourite Halloween gown for 2011, the “Luane” by Son!a

So there you have it, four spellbinding and beautiful gowns, created by some of SL’s most talented and top designers, together with some delicious history about “All Hallows Eve”, so I hope you all enjoy carving your pumpkins, dressing up, trick-or-treating and munching toffee apples and pumpkin cake.  Until next time, Happy Halloween!
