A Christmas Tale

Posted in Medieval by Piper Hanriot on December 13, 2010

Twas the night before Christmas and all through The White Armory store, nothing was stirring, not even Colton’s rouge.  The only sound that could be heard anywhere was the whirring of Bee’s sewing machine as she was putting the final touches to her latest dress.  When Bee had finished, she and Colton set the alarm, closed and locked the door and started to walk down the street.  It was a cold winter’s afternoon and the snow was falling steadily onto the ground.  All of a sudden a girl accidentally bumped into them.  “Oh I’m so sorry” she said.  “That is ok, no harm done” replied Bee. “Sorry I cannot stop” said the girl as she started to walk on.  “Merry Christmas to you” said Bee “Ba humbug” the girl muttered under her breath, for she was not a fan of Christmas, always busy with her work and not having enough time to enjoy the festive season.  The girl reached the front door to her home, went in closing the door behind her and then sank down with a deep sigh.  She made herself a hot chocolate drink before curling up in bed before drifting off to sleep happy in the knowledge that Christmas would soon be over.

Before she knew what was happening, the girl woke up with a start, blinking and pulling her bed covers closer to her, as there standing before her at the end of her bed was a ghost.  The girl tried to speak but no words came out of her mouth.  The ghost looked friendly, almost as if the girl knew her from somewhere.  “You will be visited by three spirits” said the ghost “One from the past, one from the future and one from the present day.  Please take heed to what they say and you shall be saved.  All is not lost yet, but it will be if you continue down this path” the ghost continued.  And with that the ghost disappeared and the girl snuggled down into her bed again, resting her head on her pillow before gently drifting off to sleep again.

When the girl awoke, it was so dark.  Then through the curtain a coolness to make her shiver, the first of the three spirits appeared in her bedroom.  “I am the ghost of Christmas Past” said the ghost, her voice soft and gentle.  “Long past?” asked the girl “No your past” the ghost replied.  “Rise and walk with me” said the ghost of Christmas Past, so the girl got out of bed, put on her robe and slippers and walked with the ghost into her past….

Upon their return, the girl bid the ghost of Christmas Past a goodnight before getting into bed once again and getting some sleep before the next ghost’s arrival.

The next ghost to appear in her bedroom was the ghost of Christmas Present.  This time the girl was prepared, but it was a struggle to get out of bed, especially as she had already been woken up twice that night.  She put on her robe and slippers again and walked with the ghost, this time in the familiar surroundings that were her present life and again listened carefully to what the ghost was telling her that would happen if she did not change her current situation in respect of Christmas.

They returned once again, the girl deep in thought having listened to the wise words of the ghost of Christmas Present.  She bid her fairwell and got back into bed to wait for the third of the three spirits to visit her.

The Phantom slowly, gravely, silently approached. When it came, the girl bent down upon her knee; for in the very air through which this spirit moved it seemed to scatter gloom and mystery. “I am in the presence of the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come?” said the girl.  The spirit answered not, but pointed onward with its hand.  “Lead on” said the girl and they disappeared to visit a future Christmas.

On their return, the girl was shaking.  She had been truely shocked and upset by what she had seen.  Holding up her hands in a last prayer to have her fate reversed, she saw an alteration in the Phantom’s hood and dress. It shrunk, collapsed, and dwindled down into a bedpost.  Yes! and the bedpost was her own. The bed was her own, the room was her own. Best and happiest of all, the time before her was now her own, to make amends in!

The following morning, the girl awoke feeling happy and rested.  It was a bright day, the snow had stopped falling, yet there was a glimmer of sunshine.  Today she decided to put on her best dress and go visit her family and friends, for today was Christmas Day! And the start of a new way of thinking, time to make amendments in her life and time to enjoy what Christmas brings.

So thus concludes my Christmas tale and leaves me with just one more thing to say.

Happy Christmas to all and to all a Goodnight!
